Remeber Astroworld? Yeah, I know, you may have called it all sorts of names in its last years of existence: Lastroworld, Disastroworld, Trashstroworld. Fair enough. It had certainly settled into a steady decline, and had gone over five years with no sign of a new coaster.

But admit it, you were sad when they raized the thing in a month's time, weren't you? Especially when you saw the photos of the Texas Cyclone in ruins, or maybe remembered the first time you made out on the Astroway, or for some of you, standing in line for an hour just to feel the cold blast inside the Alpine Sleigh Ride. Now all of that is gone, and for what? Still, nothing has been built, but I digress.

Back in December some beautiful news was bestowed upon Gulf Coast coaster fanatics like myself: the Kemah Boardwalk would be getting a world-class wooden coaster.

How world class? First of all, it's being designed by The Gravity Group, one of the top purveyors and sustainers of the modern “woodie” movement. Their coasters are known for steep bandks, smooth rides, and “sick” air time. The coaster in question will be called The Kemah Boardwalk Bullet, will stand 96' in height, and will sport a 92' first drop, and feature more “crossovers” than any coaster previously built in history. This means the coaster will feature gobs of “headchopper” effects as riders careen around banks of nearly 80 degrees at what will feel like record-breaking speeds.

For coater enthusiasts, this is a big deal, and a bit of a relief. It's rather odd to live in the fourth-largest city in America, and be not only without a theme park, but without any sort of a roller coaster at all. Now, the fact that we're receiving a ride that will probably top coaster enthusiasts Top Ten Lists, and may even enter the record books, seems like justice after the corporate destruction of the only testament to coaster fun that we had in our sprawling urban landscape.

The Boardwalk Bullet is set to open late-spring, early-summer, and will no doubt cause traffic jams, parking problems, and a few bruises to those in certain seats… but more than anything, it will bring smiles to many people's faces.
