The mission is offered at no cost to participants and includes airfare, hotel, meals, tours and programs.
The program brings a diverse group of 100 student delegates to the nation’s capital to learn about the Holocaust and ways to fight prejudice in schools and communities.
Participants are selected based on diversity, leadership potential and ability to discuss issues of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status.
Students will be required to participate in the league’s ongoing Dream Dialogue program of six meetings. Students are also expected to bring the lessons they learned from the mission back to their communities.
The application deadline is Tues., July 1.

Now that the Giants are on a roll, it would be sad to see Alou go down again.
Maybe it’s the weather. The hot streak has come during a rare San Francisco heat wave, and it was 86 degrees at the start of the game. Here’s hoping the Giants don’t cool off again when the weather cools down as well. But after Sunday’s game, they’re headed back East where the weather has been just as hot, only with more humidity.
Pennant fever. The old rally cry is back. Who cares that it came on just one hot day in a city where summers are usually known as the “coldest winter I’ve ever spent?”

Cirque also needs teachers (many people travel with their families) as well as barbers, physiotherapists and gourmet chefs. (Its staff cafeteria, which is set up on-site in a separate tent, features a daily menu rivaling that of any classy O.C. restaurant.)
Creative thinkers are required, too, to help dream up and design Cirque’s new shows. Ideally, candidates should have a college degree and at least two years of experience, but Page said Cirque will talk to anybody who’s interested in joining the team.
Cirque is an egalitarian organization, says Texas-born Megan Masching, who conducted a whirlwind tour of the site.
Masching is a lighting technician and stage manager with a degree in her field from Chicago’s Loyola University. But when the time comes to sweep the stage, “I pick up a broom and get busy,” she said, “just like everybody else.”
Though about 60 percent of its employees are from Quebec, and French is the unofficial second language on-site, Cirque cherry-picks talent from all over the world. more

People will take cellphone pictures of your butt, or your shoulder-shimmy, and e-mail them around the world.
Rule Four: No man, not even you, should sing while dancing. First, you are not a Soul Man. Second, you will absent-mindedly sing along to “I Will Survive” or “It’s Raining Men.” You must not sing these drinking anthems for women. You should move to the side of the dance floor where you may clap rhythmically while the ladies dance. Do not join them. Ladies, be careful. You should probably leave the dance floor at anthem time. Do not, under any circumstances, take the microphone and join the band. Bands love to do this to women at parties. Just Say No. You will not survive and it’s going to rain people making fun of you.
Rule Five: Enthusiasm on the dance floor is a really bad idea at the office party. more

In London, Northern Rock was the worst performer on the FTSE-100, closing 20.4 percent in the red, as the troubled mortgage lender’s future remained uncertain.
The U.K. government is open to any measure to help the ailing bank as long as its customers and financial stability are not jeopardized, Finance Minister Alistair Darling said on Monday.

New London, expanding the notion of what constitutes a “public use” when the government takes private property by eminent domain. It’s a case that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and continues to be debated at law schools and in state legislatures.
“The thing that impresses me the most [about the Connecticut Supreme Court] is that you see a very high quality of legal scholarship in all of their opinions in any given [historic] period,” Horton said. “There are some dynamic, energetic, incredibly intellectual voices on the court. And you see that in the language of their decisions.”
Horton is author of “The History of the Connecticut Supreme Court,” published in January, and a member of the Connecticut Supreme Court Historical Society.
To be better, more effective lawyers, Horton states in his book, attorneys need to be better historians. more

“The big news over the weekend was that a guy named Kevin Rudd won the election to be the Prime Minister of Australia. Rudd is the leader of the Labor Party and beat the incumbent John Howard whose Conservative Party had been in power for nearly 12 years. This was, of course, reported around the world as a defeat for… George Bush. everything is reported around the world as a defeat for… George Bush.” — Rich Galen
“The pessimists and defeatists who declared the surge doomed and said we were digging ourselves into a deeper hole have been proven wrong. The story of Iraq now is that terrorists have been killed, captured or driven out of territory retaken and cleansed by American and Iraqi forces — a coalition that has stabilized much of the country.” — Donald Lambro

With the burden on the earth's natural resources becoming more onerous, alternative electric energy is becoming less of an option and more of a necessity. The toll on the environment also requires us to explore realistic solutions to preserve dwindling resources.

Demand for fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal have led to the depletion of the earth's natural resources. The world's forestry reserves are in trouble too as they are being cut down to supplement energy requirements. Solutions are desperately being sought in order to avert global disaster.

Many people think of alternative electric energy as advanced scientific concepts that are too complicated for the ordinary lay man. While many alternative energy systems are indeed high technology, the principle behind most of them is actually quite straight forward. The basic idea is to harness energy sources that are infinitely available or renewable to produce electricity instead of depleting finite sources any further.

There are a few alternative electric energy systems that are quite well known and are already in quite widespread use. These include wind power, hydro power and solar power. Some of these energy systems have actually been around for hundreds of years but just updated to meet current demands.

Wind power is one alternative electric energy technology. On many European landscapes you can still find relics of old windmills that were used by farmers to grind grain. The wind was caught in the great blades of these mills which would cause them to turn. The rotating action turned a shaft and the shaft would turn the millstones. Modern windmills are not connected to millstones but rather turbines. When the turbines spin they create electricity. Wind turbines are a renewable source of electric energy because wind is free and abundant.

Like wind power, hydro power is an alternative electric energy system that has been around for a long time. Rushing water from rivers was harnessed to turn a wheel that was also connected to a mill. Modern hydro power typically uses the force of water released from a dam to turn the blades of a turbine. Turbines are connected to a generator that produces electricity. Hydro electric power is considered a clean and cost effective alternative energy system for mass usage.

The most popular alternative electricity system for homes, schools and businesses is solar power. The technology used is the most groundbreaking because it harnesses the sun's energy with tiny components called photo voltaic cells. These cells convert the energy into electricity which is able to charge batteries for consumers to make use of as needed. Solar energy is a slightly more complex technology than other alternative electricity systems but it also the most adaptable.

Have you ever paused to listen for a moment to a musician gently strumming an acoustic guitar or performing a blazing, soul-stirring flamenco number? The sounds of an acoustic guitar invoke mystery and a feeling of romance for many people. Most people never stop to consider how versatile and wide-ranging acoustic guitars are, but virtually all of them can enjoy the beautiful music they make.

Do you ever wish you knew how to play the acoustic guitar? Does walking past one in the store window make you long to walk inside, pick it up, put one hand lovingly around the neck and caress the strings gently with the other, and begin playing a tune? Have you ever thought about how expensive it would be to take lessons? Or how difficult it would be to learn?

Think about your family and friends, and the looks on their faces as you bring your guitar out, and display to them your newly acquired skill. As you put the guitar back in the case, do you ever think to yourself how great it would be if you only had time in your schedule to learn.

Acoustic guitars may seem magical, but, of course there isn't really any magic in the guitars themselves. It's their music that enchants you. It's just like when you learned to write during childhood. After a while you mastered it and finally you could take on all sorts of writing assignments. The pencil was the implement to express the thoughts, but you were the one who put it to use. It's like that with an acoustic guitar too. It's the implement you use to make music. And you learn to play an acoustic guitar in much the same way you learned to write all those years ago. First you just play around with it, like a kind of doodling, and eventually the feeling for it in your fingers just takes over. Soon the music is flowing right through your fingers and into the guitar.

To one who has never played the acoustic guitar it can be very intimidating even though it is a very compelling instrument. The music produced on a guitar can almost seem larger than life. It seems incredible that anyone could produce such amazing sounds from such a simple instrument.

The acoustic guitar's impressiveness can often lead to an attitude that causes people to approach it too delicately. They forget that guitars were meant to be used and that the power behind the music comes from the power the person gives to it.

Whether you frequently check out the acoustic guitars in the music store just to get the feel of it, or if you have got one standing silent in the corner, take the time to learn. You will always be proud that you've spent time mastering the instrument.
